How to Find the Best Engagement Photo Locations for Your Engagement

Engagement photos are the perfect way to capture your love story before the big day, and choosing the right engagement photo location is key to making these memories feel extra special! You could go for a classic beach backdrop or a gorgeous park, but I’m here to tell you that the best spots are often the ones tied to your personal story. Your location should speak to who you are as a couple, what you love, where you’ve been, and where you’re going.

Case in point: Karen and Sam!! This dynamic duo met in college in San Luis Obispo (SLO), so when it came time to choose a location for their engagement photos, they knew exactly where to go. We kicked off the session on a hill where they used to hang out together, soaking in the view and just being themselves. From there, we strolled through their favorite streets in downtown SLO, ending at one of their favorite restaurants to meet some friends. It was the perfect blend of nostalgia and love, and I honestly can’t think of a more meaningful way to have captured their journey!

Why a Meaningful Engagement Photo Location is Key

The most important thing to remember when choosing an engagement photo location? Make it personal! Sure, epic landscapes are amazing, but there’s something extra special about being somewhere that has real meaning to you both. Whether it’s the spot where you had your first date, the place you got engaged, or a park where you spent your Saturday afternoons together, incorporating these personal spaces into your photos makes them so much more powerful!

When you pick a location that means something to your relationship, you’re essentially freezing that moment in time forever. It’s a snapshot of your love, and when you look back at these photos years from now, you’ll remember all the feelings tied to that location, not just the pretty scenery. And honestly, that’s what makes a photo unforgettable!

A Perfect Example of Personal Engagement Photo Locations

Karen and Sam’s engagement session was a beautiful example of this philosophy. Their journey started on a hilltop in SLO—this was THEIR spot, where they’d unwind and relax, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. They spent a lot of time there as a couple, and it felt right to start the session there. The view, the quiet, the personal meaning—it was the perfect setting to begin telling their story.

From there, we walked through the charming streets of downtown SLO, where Karen and Sam had shared many memories. This was their place, where they’d go on walks, grab a coffee, and take in the local vibe. The mix of cozy downtown streets with their cool, California charm created the perfect backdrop for capturing their love in a real and unposed way. And I loved how natural it felt. We didn’t need anything over the top. Just the two of them, walking and laughing, making memories in the place that meant so much to them.

Why It’s Great to Keep It Relaxed

Here’s the thing: engagement photos don’t need to be stressful or perfect! Sometimes couples feel pressured to do something big or grand for their photos, but the best photos often come when you’re just being yourselves. When Karen and Sam were on that hill, I gave them a bit of space to just enjoy the moment, and get comfortable with each other, and with the camera. By the time we got to downtown SLO, they were so at ease and the session flowed naturally. It was a total blast!

Another key piece of advice? Don’t stress about trying to be “perfect.” Instead, focus on making it fun! Dance, twirl, kiss, and laugh! The photos that come from these moments are always the best ones. And I love to sit back and let you guys have your little date, capturing those candid, documentary-style moments. That’s when the magic happens!

Tips for Picking the Best Engagement Photo Location

  1. Pick a place that has meaning
Don’t just go for a pretty background—choose somewhere that’s tied to your story. It could be where you had your first date, where you got engaged, or a place you go to unwind together. These spots will bring an emotional depth to your photos.

  2. Explore your favorite streets
If you’ve spent time in a particular town or neighborhood, take a stroll down memory lane. Downtown areas with lots of charm and character make for beautiful engagement photo locations. Plus, you’ll feel more comfortable and relaxed in places that are familiar.

  3. Consider timing and lighting
The time of day matters! If you want that dreamy golden hour look, start your session around an hour before sunset. If you’re shooting somewhere with a lot of shade or tree cover (like Karen and Sam’s hill), you can start a little earlier without worrying about harsh sunlight.

  4. Keep it simple
You don’t need an epic landscape to make amazing photos. Sometimes the simplest locations—like your favorite coffee shop, a local park, or even your living room—can capture your essence as a couple. It’s not about the place; it’s about the love you share.

  5. Make it fun and relaxed
This is your moment, so enjoy it! The more fun you have, the better the photos will turn out. Let your personality shine through, and remember—this is about capturing who you are, not just a perfect shot.
