A Cottage Wedding at Flying Caballos: A Guide to San Luis Obispo Wedding Venues

When Mia and Sam told me they were having their wedding at Flying Caballos, I might have squealed a little. I mean, this place is SO cute! It’s like a perfect little rural cottage just outside of downtown SLO, with rolling hills and dreamy views that are straight out of a postcard. I’ve shot at a lot of San Luis Obispo wedding venues, but there’s something about Flying Caballos that just feels so warm and homey—it’s seriously a hidden gem for couples who want that laid-back, Central Coast vibe.

Flying Caballos: Why It’s One of the Best SLO Wedding Venues

If you’re looking for a San Luis Obispo wedding venue that gives you those rustic, relaxed vibes without being totally off the grid, Flying Caballos is IT. The venue has that perfect “country” feel while still being super close to downtown SLO, which makes it super convenient for your guests. The farmhouse itself is the absolute cutest—it’s where Mia and Sam got ready, and I was OBSESSED with the cozy vibes and vintage touches inside.

The backyard area is where all the magic happens. Imagine saying your vows with rolling hills as your backdrop, a beautiful open lawn, and the California sun shining down. Mia and Sam’s ceremony felt so peaceful and intimate, and the whole venue layout made everything flow so smoothly from the ceremony to cocktail hour and the reception.

Why Flying Caballos is Perfect for an Intimate San Luis Obispo Wedding

Mia and Sam wanted to keep their wedding on the smaller side, and Flying Caballos couldn’t have been a better fit. The venue has this natural, cozy charm that’s perfect for intimate gatherings. Plus, it’s one of those SLO wedding venues where you can really feel the connection between everyone. The open space, the family-style seating, the casual, relaxed atmosphere—it’s a place where people can just be together and have fun.

And speaking of fun, the reception at Flying Caballos was the perfect outdoor dinner party! Mia and Sam had long tables set up under string lights, with guests sharing amazing local food and wine. It felt like one big family dinner, with everyone laughing, toasting, and enjoying the Central Coast evening. Add in the backdrop of the rolling hills, and it was just... pure magic.

How to Choose the Perfect SLO Wedding Venue

There are so many amazing SLO wedding venues to choose from, but here are a few tips for picking the perfect spot for your big day:

1. Think About Your Style

Are you more of a rustic farmhouse couple (like Mia and Sam) or are you dreaming of something sleek and modern? Flying Caballos has that cozy, homey charm, but if you’re looking for something a little more elegant, you might want to check out venues like La Lomita Ranch or The White Barn!

2. Location, Location, Location

One of the best things about SLO County wedding venues is how close they are to everything. If you want a venue that’s close to downtown SLO (so your guests can explore the area), Flying Caballos is a perfect choice. But if you’re looking for something a little more off-the-beaten-path, you might want to check out spots like Cypress Ridge Pavilion or  The Penny in downtown SLO for a more modern feel.

3. Golden Hour is a Must

SLO is known for its amazing golden hour light, and Flying Caballos has the best views for those dreamy sunset shots! When we snuck away from Mia and Sam’s cocktail hour to grab some sunset photos, the light was perfect. They were so carefree and happy, just soaking in those first moments as husband and wife. It’s something to plan for if you want those magical golden hour photos!

Memorable Moments from Mia & Sam’s Wedding

There were so many moments from Mia & Sam’s wedding that stood out, but my favorite has to be when we took them up to the hill behind the venue for their sunset photos. The light was insane, and they were just so in the moment, laughing, dancing, and soaking it all in! It was one of those moments where everything just clicks, and you can feel the magic in the air.

Tips for Planning Your Wedding at Flying Caballos

  1. Prep for the Weather: San Luis Obispo has pretty mild weather, but the evenings can get chilly, especially if you’re outdoors. Flying Caballos is mostly an outdoor venue, so make sure to have some blankets or heaters on hand to keep your guests cozy as the sun goes down.

  2. Book Early: Popular venues like Flying Caballos book up fast, so if you’ve got your heart set on this spot (and I don’t blame you!), make sure you book your date early to avoid any disappointment.

  3. Embrace the Local Vibes: SLO is known for its amazing wine and fresh, local food, so definitely try to incorporate that into your wedding day. Mia & Sam did just that, and it added such a personal, local touch to their celebration.
